home about badgers about us meetings contact details newsletters membership details emergencies photographs videos useful links binfield badger group protecting badgers in berkshire charity number: 1075886 welcome to the group's web site and our work to improve the protection of badgers. its only a simple site, but youll find links to many other sites that contain lots of information on badgers, their need for protection and what you can do to help. the page about us will tell you about how the group was formed back in 1985. from those early days in binfield, weve developed into the badger trust group responsible for protecting badgers throughout the whole county of berkshire . to find out more about all things badgery, please go to www.badger.org.uk for the latest news please visit our facebook page here urgent notice - berkshire escapes the cull in 2018, but we fight on! the government started culling badgers back in 2013 with the stated intention of reducing the incidence of btb in cattle. at no point has any evidence been presented to show that this policy has met with any success. there is no evidence that culling badgers has in any way reduced the occurrence of btb in cattle. thankfully, berkshire was not after all included in the government's expansion of the badger cull into fresh areas of the uk in 2018. however, we know that in many counties the carnage was extended. if government targets were met, we could see over 40,000 badgers culled nationally, and a raft more slaughtered illegally under cover of the cull this year. berkshire may not have been in the cull this year but theres still much work to be done and any support you can give will save badger lives. weve written to the government protesting against culling, petitioned local berkshire councils not to allow culling on their land and completed defra consultations. if you would like to help prepare for any future threats of a cull in berkshire by surveying for active badger setts, please email us on [email protected] . dont worry if youve not sett surveyed before, well link you with someone who can help you to learn. also, if you havent yet done so, please add your voice by writing to your mp. the notes below may be helpful. your mp's details can be found at: www.writetothem.com/ the cull is widely acknowledged to be unscientific and therefore ineffective. the government led scientific trials identified that culling badgers can make no meaningful contribution to cattle tb control in britain. the process is too often inhumane, leaving badgers dying of their gunshot wounds for more than five minutes. the governments own independent expert panel identified this in 2013 and was later disbanded by the government. over 50 million of taxpayers money has been spent on this policy to date and the costs are set to rise, possibly to as high as 100 million. results published by the university of surrey in 2018 of tests done on roadkill berkshire badgers showed not one testing positive for btb. nationally, scientists have identified a very low figure for badgers passing btb to cows (scientists have identified that at worst 5.7% of cattle btb cases are caused by direct contact with badgers). the culling of badgers is providing no assistance to hard working farmers in their battle with btb. they need real science driven solutions. they do not need an ineffective cull that damages the eco system and may actually help to spread the disease. many farmers are now rejecting the cull. we need the government to fund still further the vaccination of badgers, develop an effective vaccine for cows and implement sound biosecurity and trading practices that will stop the spread of this disease. to read more information about the cull, please visit www.badgertrust.org.uk/cull home
